Services Offered

The RVRA Tinker Creek Transfer Station located at 1020 Hollins Rd., NE,  has a permanent drop-off recycling center. This service is provided to residents of the cities of Roanoke and Salem, Roanoke County and the Town of Vinton.

Acceptable Items

  • Aluminum Cans
  • Cardboard
  • Latex Paint (No Commercial)
    Maximum 5-gallon quantities per visit
  • Lead Acid Automobile Batteries
  • Newspapers
  • Office Paper
  • Plastic Bottles Number 1 and Number 2
  • Spray Cans
  • Tin Cans
  • Used Antifreeze (No Commercial)
    Maximum 5-gallon quantities per visit
  • Used Oil (No Commercial)
    Maximum 5-gallon quantities per visit

Tinker Creek Transfer Station Hours

These recycling materials may be brought to the Tinker Creek Transfer Station:

  • Monday through Friday
    7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Saturday
    8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Our Community Partners Offer Recycling Services

Each locality offers various recycling services in addition to the services offered by the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority (RVRA).  Here’s how it works where you live or work:

  • City of Roanoke – Curbside single-stream recycling every other week (A/B schedule). Only plastics #1 and #2 are accepted. Learn more »

  • Roanoke County – Drop-off trailers at multiple sites (Glade Creek, Glenvar, Hollins, etc.) plus Tinker Creek Transfer Station. Accepts mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum, and plastics #1 and #2. Learn more »

  • City of Salem – Drop-off centers around town. Accepts paper, cardboard, plastics #1 and #2, cans. No glass or plastic bags. Learn more »

  • Town of Vinton – Curbside collection every other week plus drop-off at Glade Creek Park. Accepts paper, cans, and plastics #1 and #2. No styrofoam or plastic bags. Learn more »

Remember: rinse containers, flatten cardboard, and keep plastic bags out of recycling bins!
